sympathy [ˈsɪmpəθi] n. 同情

His case deserves sympathy.
其情可憫。

We expressed our sympathy for her loss.
我們對她的損失表示同情。

empathy [ˈempəθi] n. 同感;共鳴

The nurse should try to have empathy between for the patient. 
護士應該試著建立自己和病人的同理心。

I feel empathy for my unemployed friend. 
我對我朋友的失業感同身受

Difference between 'Sympathy' and 'Empathy'

'Sympathy'

The emotional connection with the other person is low, although you will feel sad for the misfortune of others, but there will be no other emotional ups and downs. If the other person is sad, you won't feel the same.
與對方的情感聯繫度低,雖然會為別人的不幸感到難過,但不會有其他的情感起伏。如果對方難過,你不會有同樣的感覺。

'Empathy'

Be able to truly empathize with the emotions and pain that others have experienced.
對於他人經歷過的情緒和痛苦,能真正感同身受。

If the other person is sad, you will feel sad too.
如果對方感到悲傷,你也會感到傷心。


compassion [kəmˈpæʃn] n. 憐憫

"Compassion" is a more formal and solemn term, referring to sympathy and understanding of others, often implying an eagerness to help.
"憐憫" 是較正式與莊重的用詞,指對他人的同情與理解,常含急切願意幫忙的意味。

He can't help having compassion for a friend who has cancer.
他不禁對那位剛罹患癌症的朋友充滿憐憫之心。

Compassion is an action word with no boundaries.
憐憫是一個沒有界限的行動詞。

mercy [ˈmɜːrsi] n. 憐憫;慈悲

He begged for mercy as the blows fell on him.
當打擊落在他身上時,他乞求寬恕。

They begged for mercy.
他們求饒。

solemn [ˈsɒləm] adj. 莊嚴的



A very solemn and quiet place with an awesome view.
一個非常莊嚴和安靜的地方,景色很棒。

oath [əʊθ] n. 誓言

He swore a solemn oath to keep faith.
他莊嚴宣誓,要堅守信仰。
